Dane County – Transport 2020
Over the last decade and a half,
important steps forward towards a balanced regional transportation system
have been made in Dane County. Multiple
planning efforts have culminated in Transport 2020, a set of regional
transportation alternatives developed with representatives of the City
of Madison, Dane County,
the Governor, WisDOT, the University of Wisconsin and other local interests.
Members of the study committee
approved the locally preferred alternative for Dane County consisting of a Start-Up System and
a Full System Vision.
Key elements of the Start-Up System include:
-
Commuter rail from Greenway
Center in Middleton to East Towne Mall in Madison, with stops at
the University of Wisconsin Medical Center, Camp Randall, campus,
the Kohl Center, Monona Terrace and along the Isthmus;
-
Regional Express Bus
lines to Waunakee, Verona, Oregon/Stoughton, and Sun Prairie; and,
-
More than 10 Park and
Ride Lots.
Key elements of the Full System Vision include:
-
All of the elements
of the Start-Up System;
-
Commuter Rail extensions
to McFarland, Dane County Regional Airport, and Sun Prairie;
-
Regional Express Bus
to Cross Plains, DeForest, Fitchburg and Cottage Grove; and,
-
A Streetcar system running
from the Isthmus to the south, east and west sides, including stops
at Monona Terrace, the Kohl Center, Camp Randall Stadium, the University
of Wisconsin Medical Center, campus, and the East, South, West and
North Transfer Points.
Beginning in late 2003, an Implementation
Task Force began work on putting the Transport 2020 plans into action. Although
funding must be secure, decisions must be made as to whether to begin
with commuter rail or streetcars, and management and authority questions
must be answered, momentum builds in Madison and Dane County for an integrated, balanced transportation
system that builds the regional economy and meets the needs of all residents.
